Manistique

City and seat of Schoolcraft County, in the south-central region of Michigan's Upper Peninsula; population (1990) 3,500. Manistique lies on Lake Michigan, 64 km/40 mi northeast of the port of Escanaba, and at the mouth of the Manistique River.

Indian Lake, which extens for 5 km/3 mi behind the city, is a popular centre for camping and fishing. In the period 1860–1900, Manistique was renowned for processing and shipping locally felled lumber; after the industry collapsed, tanneries, iron furnaces, and other industries were established, and commercial fishing grew in importance.
