Manitoba, Lake

Shallow lake in south-central Manitoba province, Canada, which drains into Lake Winnipeg to the northeast through the Dauphin River; area 4,700 sq km/1,800 sq mi. Like lakes Winnipeg and Winnipegosis, Lake Manitoba is a remnant of Lake Agassiz, which once occupied much of Manitoba. At the south end of the lake is Delta Marsh, a waterfowl research station. Europeans, led by the French explorer, La Vérendrye, first saw the lake in 1738.
