Manitowoc

City and seat of Manitowoc County, eastern Wisconsin; population (1990) 32,500. The city is situated on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Manitowoc River, 35 km/22 mi north of Sheboygan.

A British fur trading post existed at Manitowoc from 1795, but permanent settlement did not begin until 1835. It was an important port by the late 1830s; shipbuilding has been the city's chief industry since 1848. Aluminium products, major appliances, cement, and soap are also made here. Silver Lake College (founded 1869) is sited in the city.
