Mankiewicz, Herman J (1897–1953)

US screenwriter and movie producer. The brother of Joseph Mankiewicz, he was born in New York. He began his career as a newspaperman, first as a foreign correspondent in Berlin, Germany, then as a New York drama editor. He moved to Hollywood in 1926, writing many original screenplays – among them Orson Welles's landmark film Citizen Kane (1941) – and adaptations, and serving as an executive producer on a variety of other films.
