Mann, Anthony

Mann, Anthony (1906–1967)

US film director. He forged a reputation for hard-hitting, stylish B-film dramas towards the end of the 1940s. In the 1950s he directed some equally tough westerns, many of them starring James Stewart, for example Winchester '73 (1950).

Mann's series of films noirs was made in collaboration with the cinematographer John Alton (1901–96), and included T-Men (1947), Raw Deal (1948), and Border Incident (1949). Among his other films are The Furies (1950), The Tall Target (1951), The Naked Spur (1953), The Glenn Miller Story (1954), The Far Country (1955), The Tin Star (1957), and El Cid (1961).
