Mann, Robert (1920- )

US violinist, composer, and conductor. He studied at the Juilliard School and made his debut recital in New York in 1941. He joined the faculty of the Juilliard after service in World War II and in 1948 founded the Juilliard Quartet, which undertook many concerts worldwide, giving first performances of works by Schuman, Babbitt, Piston, Sessions, Copland, and Foss. The group was often heard in Schoenberg's quartets and has repertory of 600 works. He was resident artist, with members of Juilliard Quartet, at the Library of Congress from 1962 and at Michigan State University from 1977.
