ars subtilior

Term found in the writings of Philipottus de Caserta to describe a late 14th-century style of great notational and rhythmic complexity. Certain works by composers such as Philipottus, Senleches, Ciconia, and Asproys include cross-rhythms of a baffling complexity that has no parallels until the 20th century.
