Mannesmann, Reinhard

    0.02 sec.

Mannesmann, Reinhard (1856–1922)

German ironfounder who invented a method of making seamless steel tubes, the Mannesmann process, patented in 1891.

Mannesmann was born in Remscheid, Westphalia, and joined the family ironworks. The idea behind the seamless tube had been conceived by his father in 1860. One of the first Mannesmann plants was installed in Swansea, South Wales, in 1887. In 1893 the Mannesmannröhrenwerke Aktiengesellschaft was formed. Mannesmann also formed a company in 1908 to exploit mineral resources in Morocco, but was forced by the French to withdraw.

The Mannesmann process involved the passing of a furnace-heated bar between two rotating rolls. Because of their geometrical configuration, the rolls drew the bar forward and at the same time produced tensions in the hot metal that caused it to tear apart at the centre. A stationary, pointed mandrel caused the ingot of metal to open out and form a tube.
