Manning, Ernest Charles (1908–1996)

Canadian politician, founder member of the Social Credit Party. He was premier of Alberta 1943–69; he also held the posts of provincial secretary 1944–55, and minister of mines and minerals 1952.

Manning was born in Cardiff, Saskatchewan, and educated at Rosetown. A follower of William Aberhart, he helped found the Social Credit Party, and in 1935 was elected to the provincial government. On Aberhart's death, Manning became premier of Alberta.
