Mansbridge, Albert (1876–1952)

British educationalist. He was one of the pioneers of adult education. He founded the Workers' Educational Association (1903), the National Central Library, the Seafarers' Education Service, the British Institute of Adult Education, and the World Association for Adult Education (1918).

He was born in Gloucester, and educated at Battersea Grammar School. He also founded the Workers' Educational Association in Australia (1913). He acted as secretary of the Workers' Educational Association 1903–15. He was the first chairman of the World Association for Adult Education and later became its president. He was a member of the Consultative Committee of the Board of Education 1906–12, and again in 1924, and was also a member of the royal commission on the universities of Oxford and Cambridge 1919–22. Mansbridge published a number of books and was created Companion of Honour in 1931.
