Mansfield, Arabella (1846-1911)

US lawyer and college teacher. She graduated from Iowa Wesleyan University in Mt Pleasant, Iowa, in 1866. In 1868 she married one of the university's professors, John Mansfield, then joined the faculty herself, where she and her husband read law together. They applied for admission to the Iowa bar and both were admitted but neither ever practised law. After studying in Europe and returning to Iowa Wesleyan, they both moved on teach at Indiana Asbury (later DePauw) University (from 1879). John suffered a mental breakdown and died in 1894 but she continued at DePauw, becoming dean of the schools of art (1893-1911) and music (1894-1911). Arabella Mansfield was born Belle Aurelia Babb in Burlington, Iowa.
