Manton, Irene

Manton, Irene (1904–1988)

British botanist. Her work was primarily concerned with chromosome cytology of ferns and flowering plants and fine structure of archegoniates and algae, including ultraviolet microscopy applied to plant chromosomes, cilia, and ciliated cells. She also studied electron microscopy applied to the fine structure of flagellates.

She was educated at the University of Cambridge (PhD 1932, ScD 1939), and was professor of botany and head of the botany department at the University of Leeds. She was president of the Linnean Society of London (1974–75).
