Manzanillo

Port in the state of Colima, on the Pacific coast of Mexico, situated 60 km/37 mi west of Colima; population (1995) 108,600. It is linked by rail with Guadalajara and Mexico City, and exports coconut oil, maize, timber, fruit, and fish. Apart from the exploitation of salt from nearby Lake Cuyutlau, industry is confined to processing the local products.

Tourists come to the town for deep-sea fishing, walking in the local hills, boat trips, and bathing. Manzanillo is sometimes called the ‘sailfish capital of the world’ and the ‘gate to the Pacific Rim’.

Manzanillo

Town and port in southeast Cuba, in the West Indies, 885 km/550 mi east of Havana and 129 km/80 mi northwest of Santiago de Cuba, to which it is linked by highway and railroad; population (1995 est) 107,700. The port was founded in 1784 in Spanish colonial times and lies in Granma Province on the Gulf of Guacanayabo. It is the commercial centre of a fertile agricultural region producing coffee, sugar cane, rice, fruit, tobacco, and cattle. Port industries also include the production of cigars and leather goods. There are zinc and copper deposits in the vicinity.
