Manzoni, Giacomo (1932– )

Italian composer. His music has featured in festivals at Berlin, Osaka, Prague, and Warsaw. He published a book on Schoenberg in 1975.

He studied at the Milan Conservatory and taught there 1962–69; he also taught at the Bologna Conservatory 1964–74, before returning to Milan.

Works

Opera

La Sentenza (1960), Atemtod (1965; given by Abbado in the 1965 Salzburg Festival), Per Massimiliano Robespierre (1975), and Doktor Faustus (after Thomas Mann, 1985).

Orchestral

Masse: Omaggio a Edgard Varèse for piano and orchestra (1977), Il deserto cresce, after Nietzsche, for chorus and orchestra (1992).

Chamber

Ten Poems of Emily Dickinson for soprano, string quartet, strings, and harp (1988); string quartet (1971).
