Scene from Maori Wars 1860–70 by Orlande Norie. The Maori Wars were precipitated by the increasing demand for land by European immigrants in New Zealand. By the end of the wars, in 1872, vast areas of Maori land had been confiscated.

Bitter conflict in New Zealand 1860–72. The insatiable European settler demand for land brought war with a number of Maori tribes. The failure of several campaigns against determined and highly resourceful Maori forces and the withdrawal of British troops in the late 1860s forced the colonial government to moderate its policy of land settlement.
