    0.32 sec.

Mar, John Erskine, 11th Earl of (1672–1732)

Scottish noble and leader of the Jacobite rising of 1715. He raised an army of episcopalian and Catholic highlanders in support of James Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender, after being dismissed from office by George I. He was forced to retreat after an indecisive battle at Sherriffmuir and went into exile in France. He was known as ‘Bobbing John’ because of his changes of political allegiance.
