Mar del Plata

Town and tourist resort in Argentina, 375 km/233 mi southeast of Buenos Aires; population (2001) 541,700. It was built in the early 1900s, and is situated near Cape Corrientes; some 2 million people visit the town each summer. Aside from tourism, the main economic activity in the town is food processing; agricultural products from the region and fish are canned here.

Mid-19th-century Portuguese investors established El Puerto de Laguna de los Padres here, about 400 km/249 mi from Buenos Aires, but the town was not founded formally until 1874.
