Maracaibo, Lake

Lake in northwest Venezuela, connected to the Gulf of Venezuela by a narrow waterway 54 km/34 mi long; area 14,000 sq km/5,400 sq mi. It is the largest lake in South America. Oil was discovered here in 1914, and the oilfields in and around the lake produce over 70% of the country's output.
