Maracay

Capital of Aragua state in northern Venezuela, near the northeast shore of Lake Valencia, and 70 km/43 mi west of Caracas; population (1996) 354,428. Maracay has many military institutions; there are two airbases in the vicinity. The town is also the centre of a thriving agricultural region, and contains government experimental stations for crop research. Its industrial base is textile production.

Maracay was founded in 1701. It was the scene of two abortive military coups against the Venezuelan government in 1992. Maracay has a number of parks and leafy plazas, including the largest Plaza Bolívar in the country. The city is the gateway to the Parque Nacional Henri Pitter.
