Maratta (or Maratti), Carlo (1625-1713)

Italian baroque painter. Reacting against the theatricality of much baroque painting, he worked in a classical style derived from his teacher Andrea Sacchi and a study of Raphael Sanzio. He produced statuesque paintings of the Madonna.

Maratta worked in Rome and was entrusted by Pope Clement XI with the restoration of Raphael's frescoes in the Vatican. Besides religious works, he also painted many portraits, which are more lively and flamboyantly baroque.
