Marburg disease

Viral disease of central Africa, first occurring in Europe 1967 among research workers in Germany working with African green monkeys. Caused by a filovirus, it is characterized by haemorrhage of the mucous membranes, fever, vomiting, headache, and diarrhoea; mortality is high. It is a haemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola virus disease.

An outbreak of Marburg disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo killed 52 miners in 1999. Bats were believed to be the vectors for the disease.
