Charpentier, Marc-Antoine

Charpentier, Marc-Antoine (c. 1645–1704)

French composer. He wrote incidental music in Italian style to plays by Molière, including Le Malade imaginaire/The Hypochondriac (1673). Later in life, as official composer to the Sainte Chapelle, Paris, he composed sacred music in French style and the opera Médée (1693).

They will be conducted by John Bryan, again at St Paul's, in a programme which celebrates the work of two masters of 17th-century music, Heinrich Biber and Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
The choir will be performing some of the best works by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, who died in Paris on February 24, 1704.
The evening features Venus and Adonis, by John Blow, and Acteon by Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
