Ammianus Marcellinus (lived 4th century)

Roman soldier and historian. The surviving books of his work, dealing with contemporary affairs in the later Roman Empire, rank him as the last major Roman historian.

Having settled in Rome some time after 371, he wrote Rerum gestarum libri/The Chronicle of Events, a Latin history of the Roman Empire from Nerva to the death of Valens (AD 96–378). Only 18 of 31 books have survived, but they provide most valuable evidence for the years 353–378.
