Marchand, Louis

Marchand, Louis (1669–1732)

French harpsichordist, organist, and composer. A child prodigy, he was organist of Nevers Cathedral at the age of 14 and later of Auxerre Cathedral, before settling in Paris in about 1689. In Paris he was organist of various churches and of the Royal Chapel 1708–14. He then toured Germany, visiting Dresden in 1717 and there declining to compete with Bach on the organ. On his return to Paris he lived mainly by teaching.
