Marckwardt, Albert

Marckwardt, Albert (Henry) (1903–1975)

US linguist. He wrote several influential textbooks on the English language, including Introduction to the English Language (1942) and American English (1958). He was president of the American Dialect Society (1962–64), the Linguistic Society of America (1962), and the National Council of Teachers of English (1967), and he served as a consultant on language and education to the US Information Agency, the US Office of Education, and the Foreign Service Institute of the Department of State. Marckwardt was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He studied at the University of Michigan, gaining his PhD in 1933, before becoming professor of English there (1928–62) and then at Princeton University (1963–72).
