Marco Island

Resort island in the Gulf of Mexico, 24 km/15 mi south-southeast of Naples, in Collier County, southwestern Florida.

Marco Island, which is 11 km/7mi long (from northwest to southeast) and 1–6 km/0.5–3.5 mi wide, stands among dense mangrove swamps and is connected to the mainland by two causeways. On the northern end of the island stands the resort community of Marco; population (1990) 9,500. The fishing village of Goodland is situated on its southeastern tip. The Cape Romano–Ten Thousand Islands Aquatic Preserve lies to the southeast
