Mardonius

Persian general who in 492 BC took command of Ionia in western Asia Minor, following the Ionian Revolt. He eased local unrest by replacing tyrants with democracy. The nephew and son-in-law of Darius I, he acted as a leading counsellor and general for Xerxes in the second invasion of Greece in 480 BC. He stayed with the army after its defeat by the Greeks at Salamis, and was killed at the Battle of Plataea.
