Maremma

Marshy district of central Italy, extending along the Tyrrhenian coast from southern Tuscany to northern Lazio regions; area 2,590 sq km/1,000 sq mi. Grosseto is the chief town of what is now a prosperous farming district. Malaria once made Maremma extremely unhealthy, but the district has since been extensively drained and settled.
