Marfa

City and seat of Presidio County, southwestern Texas; population (2000) 2,100. Marfa is situated south of the Davis Mountains and 130 km/80 mi northwest of the Big Bend National Park.

Founded as a railway town in 1881, Marfa stands at 1,429 m/4,688 ft, one of the highest altitudes in the state for a settlement. The area around the city is noted for its spectacular mountain landscape, popular among sightseers and hunters. Marfa was the setting for the 1956 motion picture Giant, and is home to the Chinati Foundation, an arts centre. A mysterious natural phenomenon known as the ‘Marfa Lights’ has been observed in the region since the 19th century.
