City and seat of Presidio County, southwestern Texas; population (2000) 2,100. Marfa is situated south of the Davis Mountains and 130 km/80 mi northwest of the Big Bend National Park.

Founded as a railway town in 1881, Marfa stands at 1,429 m/4,688 ft, one of the highest altitudes in the state for a settlement. The area around the city is noted for its spectacular mountain landscape, popular among sightseers and hunters.
