Margate City

City in Atlantic County, southeastern New Jersey; population (1990) 8,400. Margate City lies on Absecon Island, 8 km/5 mi southwest of Atlantic City, and forms part of the Atlantic City resort complex.

Margate City is the site of an extraordinary building known as ‘Lucy the Elephant’. A six-storey, pachyderm-shaped building complete surmounted by a canopied howdah, it was built in 1881, and has over the years been an office, home, and tavern.
