Margilan

Town in the Fergana wiloyat (region) of Uzbekistan, situated in the southeast of the Fergana Valley, 70 km/44 mi east of Kokand; population (1995) 145,000. Margilan is an important market town in the valley. It is also a centre of silkworm culture and textile production; silk, woollen, and camel-wool clothes are made here.

Margilan has existed since the 1st century BC. It is an old centre for silk-weaving by hand, which produces fabrics with characteristic ‘streaming’ iridescent patterns.
