Maria Stuarda

Opera in two acts by Donizetti (libretto by G Bardari, after A Maffei's translation of Schiller's Maria Stuart), produced at La Scala, Milan, on 30 December 1835. While in rehearsal at Naples the opera was banned by the King; Donizetti used much of the music in a different work, Buondelmonte, which was premiered in Naples on 18 October 1834. Maria Stuarda was not staged in London until 1966 and in New York, 1972. Leicester intercedes on behalf of the imprisoned Mary, but Elizabeth is jealous of the two and signs Mary's death warrant.
