Maria Tudor

Opera by Gomes (libretto by M Praga, based on Victor Hugo's tragedy), produced at La Scala, Milan, on 27 March 1879. Giovanna, fiancée of Gilberto, is seduced by the disguised Count Fabiano, who is Queen Mary's lover. In a jealous rage Mary arrests both Gilberto and Fabiano. Calling for Fabiano's execution, she intends secretly to substitute Gilberto in his place, but Don Gilberto allows his rival to die instead.
