Maria di Rohan

Opera by Donizetti (libretto by S Cammarano), produced in Vienna at the Kärntnertor-theater on 5 June 1843. The Count of Chalais fights a duel to avenge an insult to Maria, wife of the duc de Chevreuse. Chalais, Maria's former lover, writes her a passionate letter, which is intercepted and delivered to Chevreuse. Chalais kills himself.
