Mariani, Angelo (1821–1873)

Italian conductor and composer. He studied at home at Rimini and under Rossini at the Liceo Filarmonico in Bologna. He made his debut as violinist-conductor at Messina in 1844 and was conductor of the court theatre at Copenhagen 1847–48. After fighting in the revolutionary army in 1848, he went to the Sultan's court at Constantinople, where he stayed 1849–52. He then became conductor at the Teatro Carlo Felice at Genoa and appeared in many places in Italy and abroad as guest conductor. He gave the first Italian performance of Wagner's Lohengrin and Tannhäuser, at Bologna in 1871 and 1872 and also conducted operas by Verdi and Meyerbeer.

Requiem; hymn for the Sultan of Turkey; cantatas La fidanzata del guerriero and Gli esuli; orchestral music; songs.
