Marie-Galante

French island in the Caribbean, a dependency of Guadeloupe, 40 km/25 mi east of Basseterre; area 158 sq km/61 sq mi; population (1990) 13,500. Its capital is Grand-Bourg in the southwest of the island; population (1993) 8,000. The two other principal settlements are at Capasterre in the southeast, and Saint Louis in the northwest. The island's principal product is sugar. The island is of a limestone formation and circular in shape, with a diameter of 16 km/10 mi. The island was named by Columbus after his ship, the Santa María.
