Malbork

Town in Elbļg province, Poland, on the River Nogat, 40 km/25 mi southeast of Gdańsk; population (2002) 38,500. Industries include timber and sugar refining. From 1309 to 1457 the Marienburg Castle was the headquarters of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights (a German Christian military order).

The Marienburg Castle was one of the largest fortresses in medieval Europe, with walls 4 m/13 ft thick and quarters for a garrison of 10,000. Malbork became the capital of Polish West Prussia 1466, passing to German East Prussia 1772. After a plebiscite in 1920, it remained under German control as a frontier post on the border of the Polish Corridor (Poland's access to the Baltic Sea) until 1939. During World War II the town was damaged by Soviet bombardment.
