Marignano, Battle of

During the Italian Wars, French victory over the Swiss on 13–14 September 1515 at Marignano, a village close to the Swiss-Italian border. The French lost about 6,000 troops but gained the Duchy of Milan.

A Swiss force of about 22,000 fell on the French camp, which held some 32,000 troops, forced the defensive lines, and fought all day without reaching any decisive result. The armies disengaged at nightfall and fell to again next morning, with the Swiss gradually gaining the upper hand. The situation was reversed by the arrival of a Venetian force to assist the French and the Swiss were forced to withdraw, having lost over 12,000 troops.
