Volga-Baltic Waterway

Artificial waterway connecting the upper reaches of the River Volga with the Baltic Sea; length (excluding lakes and reservoirs) 368 km/229 mi. The waterway runs via the Rybinsk Reservoir, lakes Onega and Ladoga, and a number of small rivers and connecting canals. It was built in 1810 as the Mariinskiy Waterway; after a reconstruction completed in 1964, it was renamed the Volga-Baltic Waterway. It can take vessels of up to 5,000 tonnes capacity.
