Monroe, Marilyn (1926–1962)US film actor. The voluptuous blonde sex symbol of the 1950s, she made adroit comedies such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), The Seven Year Itch (1955), Bus Stop (1956), and Some Like It Hot (1959). Her third husband was the playwright Arthur Miller, who wrote The Misfits (1960) for her, a serious film that became her last. She died as a result of an overdose of sleeping pills.
