marimbaMusical instrument with wooden bars like a xylophone, but much larger and with a larger range and much lower pitch. The instrument has metal tubes under the keys that both amplify and sustain the sound. The marimba became very popular in the late 20th century, with many international virtuosos such as Scottish player Evelyn Glennie taking the instrument to new levels of artistry as a solo instrument.
