Marinette

City and seat of Marinette County, in northeastern Wisconsin; population (2000) 11,700. Marinette lies on Green Bay, at the mouth of the Menominee River, opposite Menominee, Michigan and 69 km/43 mi northeast of the city of Green Bay.

Marinette is a port of entry into the USA, as well as being a commercial centre and summer resort. As an industrial city, it manufactures chemicals, metal castings, car parts, and wooden and paper products. A trading post was established here in 1795 by an American Fur Company agent, who named it after ‘Queen’ Marinette Chevalier, a renowned French fur trader based in the settlement. During much of the 19th century, the logging of white pine dominated the local economy. This was replaced by manufacturing in around 1900, and nowadays service industries are growing in importance.
