Marion County

Administrative district in central Indiana; area 1,026 sq km/396 sq mi, population (1990) 797,200. Its seat is at Indianapolis, which occupies almost the entire area of the county. Lawrence, Beech Grove, Speedway, and several smaller municipalities are also located within the county (and the city).

Marion County

Administrative district in northwestern Oregon; area 3,092 sq km/1,194 sq mi, population (1990) 228,500. The county is bordered on the west by the Willamette River, on the south by the North Santiam River, and on the north by the Pudding River and Butte Creek . The county seat and main industrial centre is Salem.

The Cascade Range traverses the east of Marion County, where part of the Willamette National Forest is also located. Lumber is an important product from this region. Agriculture is the principal activity in the fertile Willamette Valley and in the centre of the county, where fruit, vegetables, grain, and other produce are grown. The northwest is dominated by the city of Salem and its suburbs.
