Mark, Peter

Mark, Peter (1940– )

US conductor and violist. He studied at Columbia University and at the Juilliard School. He performed widely as an orchestral violist and chamber musician (Chicago Lyric Opera 1960–68, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra 1968–69). In 1975 he gave the first performance of the concerto by his wife, Thea Musgrave, at Manchester and in the same year became artistic director of the Virginia Opera Association. He conducted at Covent Garden in 1982 and has led opera in New York, Los Angeles, Orlando, and Mexico City. In Brazil he gave the local first performance of Porgy and Bess in 1992. His recordings include Musgrave's Mary, Queen of Scots and A Christmas Carol.
