Marker, Chris (1921– )

French film-maker and writer. Marker has made several left-wing documentary films, notably the anti-colonial Les Statues meurent aussi (1952) with Alain Resnais, Lettre de Siberie (1958), Description d'un combat (1960) about Israel, and Cuba Si! (1961).

His other films include Le Joli Mai (1962), La Jetée (1963), told entirely in stills, If I Had Four Dromedaries (1966), Loin de Vietnam (1967), La Bataille des 10 millions (1970), Sans Soleil (1982), and Level Five (1996). From 1967 Marker worked in a political film collective, SLON, based in Paris. He has also worked in television, directing the miniseries L'Heritage de la chouette (1989).
