Market Street

Name of two major inner-city commercial thoroughfares, in San Francisco and Philadelphia. Market Street in San Francisco traditionally divided the city's power centres and fashionable residential neighbourhoods to the north – such as the Financial District, Union Square, the Civic Center, and the Western Addition – from its less affluent districts to the south, such as South of Market (SoMa) and the Mission District. In Philadelphia, Market Street is an historic thoroughfare that has served as the city's main street since the time of William Penn. Originally known as ‘High Street’, this wide avenue extends for 8.8 km/5.5 mi between the Delaware River and the western city limits, passing through the districts of Old City, Center City, University City, and West Philadelphia.
