Markham

Village in Cook County, northeastern Illinois, a residential suburb of Chicago located 29 km/18 mi southwest of the city; population (1990) 13,100.

Markham

Town in York Regional Municipality, southern Ontario; population (1991) 153,800. Markham lies on the Rouge River, 24 km/15 mi northeast of Toronto city centre.

Markham has been an agricultural community since the early 19th century, but is now a rapidly growing suburb of the Toronto conurbation. It is both a residential district and home to many corporate offices. In the period 1986–91 alone, it experienced a 34% increase in population.
