Marks, Simon (1888–1964)English chain-store magnate. His father, Russian immigrant Michael Marks, had started a number of ‘penny bazaars’ with Yorkshireman Tom Spencer in 1887. Simon Marks entered the business in 1907 and, with his brother-in-law Israel (later Lord) Seiff (1899–1972), he built up a national chain of Marks & Spencer stores.
