Marksville

City and seat of Avoyelles Parish, south-central Louisiana, 27 mi/43 km east-southeast of Alexandria; population (1990) 5,500.

Settled in the late 18th century on the Red River (which later moved 8 km/5 mi north), Marksville was the site of a Civil War battle on 14 March 1864, when Fort De Russy fell to Union forces. The area produces rice, sugar cane, cotton, yams, and other crops. The Marksville State Commemorative Area is the site of an ancient ceremonial complex that dates from before AD 400.
